The second volume, devoted to military and religious institutions, is missing. "A small masterpiece, which specialists themselves should study with the greatest profit. Firstly, because (...) there was no exposition focused primarily on traditional forms of social life in Israel, from nomadism to sedentary and urban life, the organization of the family and the state (the subject of this volume), of the army and the clergy (the subject of a forthcoming second volume). This is a kind of commentary on the Old Testament from a very particular, often highly illuminating perspective, useful both to those interested in general knowledge and to scholars: exegetes, historians, and sociologists. Secondly, because of the intrinsic value of this exposition. It is true that, apart from the detailed bibliography at the end, one will find no technical discussion, no explanatory or justificatory notes, no references, except for countless ones to the Old Testament." But make no mistake: it is only the scientific apparatus that has been sacrificed in favor of a clear, well-written, and effortlessly flowing exposition. Anyone familiar with the field will quickly realize that this apparent simplicity conceals an enormous amount of research, a vast body of solid and carefully considered knowledge, and consistently balanced, often novel and insightful, solutions to numerous problems. Let us only hope that the second volume is not too long in coming and offer our unreserved congratulations to the author of such a fine and excellent book. (J. Botéro, Revue de l'histoire des religions, no. 1/1960, p. 103 et seq.).
