A magnificent and monumental collection bringing together the ancient and reformed Customs of Brittany AND the Decrees and Regulations of the Parliament of Brittany by Sauvageau. This collection is divided as follows: the first part comprises the reformed custom and Sauvageau's commentary in its first and only edition, the 1737 edition being merely an identical reprint. The author published this work in 1710 at the request of the Estates of Brittany. At the end of the volume, one finds two particularly interesting treatises: one on the "marches" (borderlands), which consists of an analysis of the autonomous legal system of fiefs in the frontier zone; and the treatise on the indult, a papal privilege that allowed officers of the Parliament to request, for themselves or for a cleric, an annual income. The study of this privilege is so interesting because this right did not exist in Flanders or Artois and was fiercely contested in Brittany. The second part of our collection—although published concurrently with Volume I—reproduces the text of the “Very Ancient Custom,” supplemented by ancient constitutions and ordinances of the Dukes of Brittany, which constitute its principal interest. The third part is a captivating collection of Breton judgments rendered between 1636 and 1705, featuring the writings of the most eminent orators of the period; the quality of Berryer's pleadings and Hévin's legal opinions indeed make this edition one of the most prestigious from a scholarly standpoint.
