    “Mr. Van Hille, whose work begins with a bibliography of customs, collections of judicial decisions, and ancient and modern works relating to his subject, frequently consulted the archives in order to understand how customs and legal opinions were applied in practice. He presents us with a very complete picture of the financial relationships between spouses in Flanders during the last three centuries of the Ancien Régime: he shows us, from the outset, the considerable role played by the matrimonial property regime, and, in particular, by the marriage contract, which essentially aimed to safeguard the interests of the family. (…) Mr. Van Hille’s work constitutes an excellent legal study of matrimonial law at the end of the Ancien Régime, and the author knows how to draw upon history whenever it is necessary to indicate the precedents for a rule in force at the time under consideration or to demonstrate the traditional nature of a provision of Flemish customs that contradicts the principles later adopted by our Civil Code.” » (R.
