While it shows signs of legal humanism, it can also be considered a Dutch form of usus modernus pandectarum. Translated into German in the 19th century, it remains an important source of South African law today. Voët sought to unite the theory and practice of Roman and modern law. In contrast to legal humanism, his aim was to explain the law, not to engage in philological criticism of texts.
