One of the most important works on Roman law and one of the greatest commentaries on the 50 Books of the Digest, originally published in Amsterdam in 1698. While it shows signs of legal humanism, it can also be considered a Dutch form of usus modernus pandectarum. Translated into German in the 19th century, it remains an important source of South African law today. Voët sought to unite the theory and practice of Roman and modern law. In contrast to legal humanism, his aim was to explain the law, not to engage in philological criticism of texts. Instead of problematizing the genesis of the Corpus Juris Civilis, he fundamentally accepted it as a simple legal text. According to Voët, knowledge of customary law was sufficient to explain the law and to be a good jurist, whereas for his colleague Gerhard Noodt, who subjected the texts of the Corpus Juris to philological criticism by examining possible interpolations, the humanistic understanding of the texts necessarily stopped at historical and philological teaching. Rare complete edition of the last volume of the index.
