He studied at the universities of Leipzig, Wittenberg, Frankfurt (Oder), Greifswald, and Rostock. At Rostock, he received his doctorate in law in 1569, was admitted to the law faculty in 1575, and began teaching canon law in 1580. In 1581, he was appointed to the vacant chair of codicology from Lorenz Kirchhoff. In 1586, he became rector. He also served as a ducal advisor and chancellor.
