Maine's work has not had the considerable influence in France that it has in England. Yet his texts offer French legal historians insights with which they are largely unfamiliar: the relationship between Western and Eastern law in ancient institutions. This volume includes, in particular, a revised edition of the seminal work "Village Communities in the East and West," a series of lectures delivered by the author, among which are the following titles: "The East and the Study of Law"; "The Sources of Hindu Law"; "The Village Community in the West"; and "Historical Origin of Price and Rent." Other key texts in this collection include: "The Influence of India on the Ideas of Modern Europe," "Theory of Evidence," and "Roman Law and Legal Education."
