“Paul Meyer, from whom Mr. Brunel received instruction and whose scholarly work he continues today, had, as is well known, conceived the vast undertaking of compiling a complete inventory of all judicial and administrative texts written in Provençal during the Middle Ages and editing them, at least in part. However, he was unable to go beyond the first volume, published in 1909. Less ambitious in his aims, but wishing to achieve his goal within a more modest framework, Mr. Brunel limited himself to ‘the period of the oldest diplomatic texts, which happens to coincide almost exactly with that of the oldest and most beautiful literary texts.’ Therefore, after spending several years painstakingly collecting Provençal charters prior to the 13th century, excluding copies, he presents in this volume their text, accompanied by a historical and philological commentary that does him great credit and definitively places him among the leading representatives of the French Provençal school.” (…) The collection compiled by Mr. Brunel (…) constitutes a rich repertoire, as interesting for institutions and customs as for the study of the language itself. I lack the expertise to properly assess here the morphological study which serves as an introduction to the work. » (Ch. Samaran, Bibliothèque de l'école des chartes, t. 88/1927, p. 337).
