“The authors’ merit lies not only in having brought to light an extraordinary wealth of documents, which will be a true revelation for researchers unfamiliar with our southern archives. They have often reunited sources that the circumstances of tradition had separated; thus, series distributed among the National Archives, various departmental archives, and certain foreign sources, such as the Vatican Archives, are reconstituted. They have also gone so far as to warn researchers of some of the difficulties they might encounter and the precautions they should take. (…) This sixth part, devoted to the Archives of Merchants and Private Individuals (pp. 1387–1433), is, as one might expect, of a density that will delight historians of commerce and the bourgeoisie. Every line is worth noting.” Let us emphasize once again the pleasantness and clarity of the presentation and the use of maps by which the authors vividly present the geographical distribution of this or that type of document, of the monk as he has been preserved. » (Philippe Wolff, Annales du Midi: Revue archéologique, historique et philologique de la France méridionale, n° 111/1973, p. 105-106).
