“The author’s aim is to analyze this particular object, namely ‘the Arabs.’ Analysis in the sense of ‘psychoanalysis’; and there would be much to say about the methodological and terminological borrowings that Jacques Berque has made from psychoanalysis: the importance of history in determining the psychological attitude of contemporary Arabs, particularly with regard to ‘things’ (whether ‘nature’ or the ‘machines’ with which industrial civilization furnishes their environment). But while the author makes use of what is fruitful in the psychoanalytic method, he does not thereby reject all other means of approach. On the contrary, his originality lies in a successful effort to illuminate his subject from all angles by, so to speak, anchoring the objective to everything that offers a foothold in this Arab world in the making.” (Jacques Vernant, Foreign Policy, no. 4/1960, p. 418 et seq.).
