He therefore had to review almost all the events of our history. For there is, so to speak, none that has not exerted a more or less marked influence on the development of what we call the Third Estate. […] He has brought to light many new facts or facts whose importance had been overlooked. […] The skill he has displayed in grouping the facts, the taste he has shown in choosing details, and above all the unity he has been able to give to such a complex subject, make this essay on the formation and progress of the Third Estate a work as interesting as it is instructive.
