In the aftermath of the Second World War, this brochure provided ANSA with an opportunity to trace the evolution of foreign trade from 1938 to 1945, highlighting in particular the problems linked to the occupation. The foreword observes that “during five years of war, pre-existing trade flows were disrupted, the structure of foreign markets was profoundly altered, and France, with depleted soil and aging infrastructure, found itself in a position of clear inferiority vis-à-vis competitors for whom the continuation of hostilities provided the opportunity to renew and modernize their equipment.” The group dedicates a chapter, for example, to “control of trade with the enemy” and to “state-backed trade credit insurance.”
