    A veritable compendium of 18th-century political science, *The Science of Government* is a monumental work to which its author, a Provençal jurist and Grand Seneschal of Forcalquier, devoted more than thirty years of his life. The last six volumes were published posthumously by his nephew, Abbé de Burle de Réal de Curban. In it, the author attempts to combine Enlightenment philosophy with the idea of ​​absolute monarchy and respect for social and religious order. This duality, both progressive and conservative, hindered the book's success, despite its groundbreaking nature in several areas: it foreshadows Beccaria, whose ideas on criminal law are close to his own, and predicts the disappearance of Poland, absorbed by Muscovy, and the unification of Italy. In the first volume, by way of introduction, he examines the formation and advantages of different human societies, both in Europe and in Asia and America. In Volume II, he compares the government of France with that of other European states. The following volumes are devoted respectively to natural law, public law, the law of nations, politics, and ecclesiastical law.
