Often misleadingly called “works,” this is actually a re-edition of his Questions of Law, originally published in 1668, to which the author adds maxims, a collection of legal arguments, and court decisions. While the presentation is somewhat archaic, with questions addressed one after another, his analysis tackles the most complex legal issues of the time, relating to major themes of the era such as wills, the regime of family property, annuities, ownership, and obligations. He incorporates into his work all previous and contemporary legal thought, from Roman law to the authors Cujas and Le Douaren, not forgetting medieval law and barbarian laws. He acquires a reputation as a “virtuoso” of written law, which will bring him fame.
