    Escarra had begun drafting a general treatise on commercial law before the war, which was not finally completed until 1959. In the interim, "this manual" was published—a modest title for this thousand-page work which, along with Ripert's, marked the renewal of commercial law doctrine after the war. Our edition is further supplemented by the two updates of 1949 and 1953. It should be noted that Escarra was the driving force behind the commission for the reform of the commercial code convened in the 1950s.
