“I have never been, and I will never be, a supporter or a collaborator of the enemies of my country; I am French, and I am proud to be so: all my desires have been for the glory and prosperity of France; all my hatred has been directed at this cabinet that has been profiting from the misfortunes of Europe for eight years, at this cabinet that instigated so much unrest and plotted so many crimes; and if I approached the French princes with the intention and hope of serving my country, I distanced myself from them, filled with the contempt that will always be inspired by men who rely on the rights of their birth, and not on their courage or personal qualities, to return to an empire whose substance their courtiers and flatterers would soon devour and whose disasters would perpetuate. Truth will compel me to say what the moderation of my mind would lead me to keep silent; I cannot and will conceal nothing.” Whether this writing is condemned or approved, I will have fulfilled my duty; I will have left my country a token of my love for it; and these lines, I dare at least to hope, will defend my memory against the attacks of slander or hatred.
