An author who wrote both before and after the Revolution on old and new procedural law, Pigeau was considered the foremost proceduralist of the early 19th century. This work was published simultaneously with his two-volume treatise (La procédure civile des tribunaux de France démonté par principes), which remains a classic. Here, he presents a completely different subject matter, as it is a question-and-answer course which, in addition to its substantive merits, demonstrates methodologically that, in matters not codified by law, the rigor of the formal structure was probably less pronounced.
