    B. Starck concludes his preface thus: “These remarks, intended to introduce some nuances into the system proposed by Mr. Roland, do not, of course, detract from the merits of his work. The breadth of his knowledge—whether it concerns the study of case law or that of French legal doctrine on the subject—the clarity of the exposition, the relevance of certain criticisms, testify to the qualities of a jurist and hold within them the greatest promise.”
