    octavo, full brown calf, gilt title on spine with 5 raised bands, decorated with elegant gilt fleurons and framing fillets, a gilt roll underlines the edges, pl. p. frontispiece, (covers and spine slightly rubbed, headcaps and corners worn with small losses), fresh interior, 378 p.
    First edition of this text, whose authorship is disputed: "It is known that the publisher mistakenly attributed it to Boullainvilliers, but that it is the work of Jean Lelaboureur. (...) If the publisher attributed it to Boullainvilliers, it is apparently because he found the frontispiece, 'by M. D. B.', for I do not see the author named in full anywhere" (Dupin, ref. 875). Under the title "history," it should be understood that the form is almost novelistic; the author uses a significant number of examples and writes in a style that is clearer but also freer than in a true treatise. This contrasts with the content, which clearly and unadorned highlights all the difficulties, prerogatives, and inconsistencies between the status of Peers and the Peerage itself. A rare work.
