    A captivating little work relating to the rules of the papal chancery concerning the various acts it is responsible for issuing. It begins with a very precise description (for which we have not found an equivalent in French) of the organization of the curia, which includes the “prefect of the signing of graces”, the “datery” and the “sub-datery”, the “officer of minor dates”, and the “treasurer of componands”. Next, we find models with steel engravings to represent the signatures of the chancery, and finally a description of the various acts having the character of benefits with their costs, and it is not without amusement that one will study those concerning dispensations for marriages: The dispensation “pro nobelibus” costs 66 pounds (70 “cum absolutione”) while that of the poor “in forma pauperum” is limited to 30 pounds (but after verification of the attestations of poverty)... In the same way, the commutation of a vow of chastity in order to marry or to continue in a contracted marriage costs 15 pounds, while the absolution of hidden casual homicide for which there was no information costs 20 pounds.
