And while Dumoulin is often criticized for his \"archaic\" approach to customs, fundamentally he remains an extremely modern commentator, undoubtedly the founder of French civil law. These ideas were later largely adopted by Pothier, ultimately, albeit with some modifications, in the Civil Code of 1804.
