The 19th century, which until then had received relatively little attention, has also become a fruitful field of investigation. It is at the intersection of these two phenomena, and to extend them, that the contributions gathered in this volume, written by legal historians, civil law scholars, economists, and sociologists, are situated. Drawing on the model of the Lyon Faculty of Law, these contributions trace the intellectual history of the confrontation between law and the emerging social sciences, and demonstrate its impact on the method and substance of legal science, as well as on how we conceive of the place of law and the jurist in the public sphere.
