large octavo [quarto size], full mottled brown calf, gilt title on a burgundy morocco cover, spine with 5 raised bands decorated with fleurons, lace and gilt rolls, elegant and fine headbands, tailpieces and initial letters, numerous genealogical trees outside and in the text, wide outer and lower margins, (missing the headcap, slight abrasions on the covers, 1 wormhole going through the whole book without affecting the text, rare spots, marginal foxing, 1 note in ink in the margin), a fine copy despite the aforementioned defects, [4 leaves]-362 pages-[4 leaves of table].
This volume is entirely devoted to the right of representation, that is, the rights of male descendants and their consequences for the inheritance of the throne. At the time, it constituted a particular case in Brittany; thus, a woman could "represent" the duchy, but it was her husband who truly governed. The author offers interesting insights that diverge from the "classical" approach found in Denisart or Guyot (Répertoire universel et raisonné de jurisprudence, Paris, Panckoucke, 1778, Vol. XXI, p. 130 et seq.); is this not, in fact, why it is not referenced by Dupin? Moreover, the work presents an excellent methodology and a great many references to the principal authors on the subject. A rare book.
