It goes far beyond the scope of its title. The term “law,” which appears in the title, should be understood in its broadest sense, as the author notes: it refers to the entirety of hospital institutions, themselves situated within the framework of the kingdom's social needs. In this important work, two elements capture the canonist's attention: hospital administration and religious personnel. Indeed, from the 16th century onward, the royal authority issued edicts entrusting the administration of hospitals to laypeople; this brought them into conflict with the Church, which, at the Council of Trent, asserted its ancestral authority over these establishments. It is interesting to see how this “conflict” was resolved by both the kings and the Church. The difficulties stemmed in part for the Church from the fact that the Council of Trent was not officially accepted by France; this was remedied by having local councils adopt provisions from Trent. In practice, adjustments were made to local circumstances; gradually, mixed commissions composed of laypeople and clergymen governed charitable institutions until 1789. The bishop, in principle, retained the presidency of the governing board. Here again, consideration was given to claims based on conflicting ancient customs, which entrusted the presidency to another authority (René Metz, Histoires, edited by P.
