Dupin, ref. 1678, details the bibliography of this work: “The first three volumes were first printed in 1705, 1710, and 1719. It is a work of great erudition. Nicolas La Mare, commissioner at the Châtelet, was commissioned to undertake this work by the First President, Lamoignon. He worked on it until his death on April 25, 1723; he was then in his 84th year. The four volumes do not complete the Treatise on Police, as Commissioner La Mare had planned it: he had divided it into twelve books, and only six were published.” Our copy brings together, in their original editions, volumes III and IV of this work, published in 1719 and 1738 respectively; volumes I and II are presented here in 1722. This comprehensive work gathers everything concerning public law into a single volume. Particularly well-documented, thanks to Delamare's meticulous examination of capitularies, ordinances, archival registers, and manuscripts from various libraries, Delamare received the support and assistance of a great many scholars dedicated to the history of the institutions of the monarchy. The first book deals with "The Police in General and its Magistrates and Officers" (vol. I), the second with "Religion" (vol. I), the third with "Morals" (vol. I), the fourth with "Health" (vol. I), and the fifth with "Provisions" (vols. II & III). The sixth, which comprises all of volume IV, is devoted to "Public Works." This analysis of public law through its sources remains a reference point even today. It is very rare and comprehensive.
