Chêne (p. 185 ff.) recounts in a captivating manner the genealogy of this text and, in particular, the difficulties the author encountered in having it published. The Duke of Fleury refused to accept the dedication, and a certain Yvernès maintained that it was in fact a manuscript written by his grandfather and copied by Serres. Chêne nevertheless demonstrates how unfounded the latter claim is and how this work constitutes one of the major texts of Toulouse legal doctrine and, more fundamentally, of the written law systems of the 18th century.
