    FRISON (Gustave)
A watercolor sketch caricaturing a lawyer and his client: "Now then, Mr. Lawyer, can I be held responsible for the actions of a donkey that was lent to me and to whom I am neither related nor a friend? Suppose you're a donkey, I'll bridle you, saddle you, mount you, and we'll go to the fair. Once there, you start braying, kicking, farting, breaking the china, sticking your dirty nose in the cake, and then everyone blames me. Is that fair? If you're a vicious beast, is it my fault...?"
Date :
    circa 1870
32.5 x 25 [40 x 30 frame] cm., Lithograph under modern decorated wooden frame with gilt field passe-partout, (brittle paper yellowed uniformly, very slight rubbing mark on the avocado robe, edge of the sheet faded with very slight mq.).
Beyond the satirical approach to the judicial world, G. Frison hides his anti-Semitism under the thick caricature, as could also be seen in his satirical and anti-clerical weekly (1878-1885).
