    This pamphlet reproduces the pleadings of Mr. Bontoux's lawyer, who was primarily responsible for the Union Générale affair in his capacity as manager of that bank. The Union Générale affair had considerable repercussions at the beginning of the Third Republic. This institution proclaimed itself the Catholic bank, and the crash it suffered, attributed to concerted action by the financial markets, ruined many Catholic families. It was at the origin of the first surge of modern anti-Semitism experienced by France, and in this respect, it foreshadowed the Dreyfus Affair (see M. Garçon, *Histoire de la justice sous la IIIème République*, Vol. 2, *Les scandales financiers*).
