quarto, magnificent late 19th century “à la Duseuil” binding in full burgundy morocco signed Gruel (one of the greatest masters of art binding and who wrote numerous treatises on this discipline), gilt fillets on the edges, delicate gilt fillets against the grain on the headcaps, handmade paper on the endpapers, pastedowns decorated with wide and very fine framing lace, woodblock printing and printing, in Gothic type, with wide margins bearing some ink annotations, initials, modern Ex-Libris printed on the inside pastedown, (6 pages restored with suitable adhesive tape, marginal brownish stain on the title page, some marginal dampstains), 36 leaves.

RARE! That's the first adjective that comes to mind when describing this little book. Its presentation is truly remarkable, provided one accepts that it's a "modern" binding. Indeed, Gruel is considered one of the greatest art bookbinders of the 19th century, and our copy is no exception. As for the number of copies in circulation worldwide (at least in public libraries), it can't be more than five. The National Library of France (BnF) does hold one, but its cataloging is such that it doesn't entirely match our copy (the title is very slightly different)... just like the one in the Rennes Municipal Library (La Borderie Collection). Finally, because it is one of the extremely rare collections of the 1535 edicts, found only partially in two other works: *La Grande Conférence des Ordures et Édits Royaux* by J. Imbert and *Le Recueil d'Édits et d'Ordures Royaux* by P. Néron and É. Girard. This rare Breton edition was printed in Gothic type by Jean Georget, a printer in Rennes, from 1539 to 1554. It represents the first attempt at an official reform of Breton customary law within the framework of the Ordinance of Villers-Cotterêts, issued by Francis I in 1539. Since 1532, Brittany, which possessed registers, had been annexed to France. The king's ordinance mandated the use of the French language for all judicial decrees in the kingdom, which were henceforth to be "pronounced, recorded, and delivered to the parties in the French vernacular and not otherwise."
