(Dupin no. 993). The collections of institutes published particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries represent an attempt to codify French customary law using the framework provided by Justinian law. The most important authors of the 18th century attempted this. Boutaric, who also wrote numerous commentaries on the ordinances of Louis XV, made a significant contribution to this movement. This work remains cited by contemporary legal scholars as one of the rare attempts to systematize the law of obligations (see J.L. Gazzaniga, Introduction historique au droit des obligations, PUF 1991).
