He believed that the Christian “principalities” lacked justice, notably due to several deficiencies in the study and application of the laws. He compared this situation to the difference between the skills of lawyers and orators, jurisprudence and rhetoric: “There is a flaw in the establishment of discipline, where laws are taught without being enforced. In such a great confusion of laws, no one can know what the exceptions are, to which the laws, which are the responses, address them.” We possess the second, and final, edition of this text, the first dating from 1565.
