VI), Dupin summarizes the author's life thus: “Few lives have been as turbulent as Linguet's. His career was marked by great talents and great errors, not by brilliant successes and spectacular disgraces.” The Theory of Civil Laws is one of Linguet's most important books, “in which shines a remarkable talent, strong thoughts, profound insights, and a style full of brilliance and boldness.” Vehemently opposed to Montesquieu's doctrines on government, Linguet, in this essay, “denies the existence of natural laws; combats all the principles presented as the foundation of human societies by Cicero, Bacon, and Montesquieu; presents Oriental despotism as the model of good government, the beautiful ideal of human societies; and maintains that the free state of our day laborers is not worth the chains of ancient slaves.” With this book, Linguet faced very virulent attacks, particularly from Abbé Morellet, who wrote his *Theory of Paradox* in response. Among his *Memoirs and Pleas*, some were of greater interest than others. This is the case with the *Memoir for the Duchess of Olonne*, the one for the Duke of Aiguillon, the defense of the Countess of Béthune in which he opposed Gerbier, another famous orator, and finally, his own plea. The copy we are presenting corresponds to the last edition of all his published works, and above all, to the most complete.
