Vidal's Course in Criminal Law marks a significant date in the history of criminal law education: it is the first work to devote substantial attention to penology and to go beyond simply commenting on the Code. Vidal was greatly influenced by the tenets of the International Union of Penal Law, which at the beginning of the century broke with deterministic theories related to criminal anthropology and sociology. Vidal is thus one of the first French authors of criminal law to quote extensively from Durkheim. We have the latest edition, significantly updated by Magnol.
