To escape his pursuers, he took refuge in the square in front of Rouen Cathedral. Believing himself safe, he was nevertheless arrested despite his divine protection and imprisoned to await trial. The Church claimed the prisoner, who fell under its jurisdiction given the circumstances of his arrest. Thus began a long legal battle between the bailiff and the chapter, which ultimately obtained the prisoner's pardon by virtue of the privilege of Saint Romain. This case sheds light on the thorny relationship between secular and ecclesiastical jurisdictions during this era of hardship, when crime was rampant and judgments followed one another in rapid succession (as did the execution of sentences) without due process necessarily being followed.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Mémoire du Droit","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":51963107475803,"sku":"25784","price":600.0,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0941\/0163\/5419\/files\/25784-1.jpg?v=1766928570","url":"https:\/\/www.memoiredudroit.fr\/en\/products\/25784-serisay-plaidoyers-et-responses-concernant","provider":"La Mémoire du Droit","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
