    The first textbook on Public Instruction (DIP) was published after the teaching of this subject was planned starting in 1880. Initially published under the title "Elementary Treatise," it became a "Textbook" upon the publication of the author's major six-volume work. Even though Battifol emphasizes that the author, like Pillet and Bartin, remained dependent on the limited development of the subject's conceptualization, his pioneering role in this field should not be overlooked, as evidenced by the passages he devotes to defining the subject in his Introduction.
